Overview

In 2021, TASIWA implemented the Daftari SCD Project, funded by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT).

The project used the daftari — the exercise book every student carries — as a tool to deliver sickle cell disease messages and to amplify the voice of sickle cell in the community, especially in schools.

By placing accurate information about sickle cell disease in students' hands every day, the project helped spread awareness to pupils, teachers and families, and supported efforts to reduce the stigma and misconceptions surrounding the disease.

Project target

Key interventions

  1. 01

Sickle cell messages in exercise books

Exercise books (Daftari) carrying key sickle cell disease information were used as an everyday awareness tool for students.

  2. 02

    Awareness in schools

Schools were the main focus, so that pupils and teachers understand sickle cell disease and support classmates living with it.

  3. 03

    Reaching families and the community

Students carried the messages home, helping to spread awareness and challenge stigma in the wider community.

Our impact

The Daftari SCD Project showed how a simple, everyday item can become a powerful channel for health education — reaching students and, through them, their families and communities.
